About the Department of Electronic Engineering

The Department of Electronic Engineering is a large and vibrant engineering Department at York. The Department has 40 academic staff (including part-time and job share), and around 100 research staff & students and a dedicated team of support staff, providing excellent administrative and technical assistance. It holds the Bronze Award from Athena SWAN which recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research, which was awarded in 2013.

The Department is consistently highly ranked for Electronic Engineering in the annual National Student Survey, recently (2018) ranked second in the Russell Group for overall satisfaction and first for our teaching and was ranked 1st in the UK for graduate employment within one year of leaving the university (Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) 2017).

Research

The Department of Electronic Engineering undertakes high quality fundamental and applied research within its research groups, centres and spin-out companies. Our core strengths align with the following application areas:

The Department is distinctive in undertaking impact-led and collaborative research and promotes partnerships that span academic disciplines, industry, commerce, cultural organisations and charities. This collaborative approach not only ensures inspirational and innovative research that impacts broadly across academia, but also a pipeline for translation of our core research leading to commercial implementation and societal adoption.

In the 2014 REF 87% of our research outputs were judged world-leading or internationally excellent. Our research groups work with industry and universities across the world while providing a friendly and supportive environment for staff and students.

Teaching

We have a long-standing reputation for high quality teaching and learning and highly employable graduates. Our MEng and BEng undergraduate programmes are fully accredited by the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) at CEng (Chartered Engineer) level. In addition we offer 6 Taught MSc degree programmes, number of which are also accredited by the IET. All undergraduate programmes offer a year in industry option. The programmes are distinctive in nature by the amount of large group project work that is undertaken throughout all degree programmes.

Within Electronic Engineering our student body consists of approximately 400 undergraduate students and 130 taught postgraduate students. We offer a suite of MSc programmes, covering the latest technologies and skills in important industry sectors. We have a vibrant community of postgraduate research students enrolled on our PhD programme bringing our total student cohort to around 600 students.
