Working at York

A view of Greg's place, a open air location to enjoy lunch or socialise outside near to Vanbraugh dining area.

The University of York is a member of the prestigious Russell Group and has established an international reputation for academic excellence.

We are one of the most successful research universities in the UK and one of only four UK universities to be rated both Gold for teaching in the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and top ten for research in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking of the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021).

We're proud to be recognised as the fifth best university to work for in the UK, and 27th best organisation overall in the Financial Times UK Best Employers 2026 rankings, reflecting our close-knit, supportive community's dedication, generosity of spirit and commitment to our shared purpose.

Our vision is to make the University of York a world leader in the creation of knowledge through fundamental and applied research, the sharing of knowledge by teaching students from varied backgrounds and the application of knowledge for the health, prosperity and well-being of people and society.

Map of campus

The campus

Underpinning our excellent reputation is a friendly and welcoming campus, set in a beautiful landscaped park.

The University has undergone an unprecedented period of expansion and renewal since 2000. We have invested in twenty new buildings on the original campus and have completed the first and second phases of the £750m Heslington East development. Our investment in new colleges, teaching and learning spaces, laboratories, research facilities and a new sports village mean there has never been a better time to join us.

While expanding, we have worked hard to retain our friendly and inclusive sense of community through a collegiate system.

The self-contained campus offers a range of facilities including the sports centre, catering outlets, shops, a nursery, a doctor’s surgery and banks.

Frequent bus services transport staff and students around campus and the short distance into York city centre.
