Role Description

Department

Research & Enterprise (R&E) is the Professional Services Directorate responsible for developing and supporting all the University of York’s strategies for research and knowledge exchange, and for providing comprehensive support to York’s academic Departments in their research and impact activities.

Role

The purpose of the Commercialisation Manager role is to work in partnership with academic staff and R&E colleagues to drive commercial outcomes from opportunities arising from the research of Academic Departments at York in the Health and Life Sciences.

Outcomes will include spin-out company formations, commercial licence deals, commercial service provision, externally-funded projects such as translational awards (which advance opportunities towards commercialisation). Success in the role will make a significant contribution to the impact of the research from the Departments involved.

We are seeking someone with experience of research commercialisation or technology transfer in a research environment and who has supported the development of spin outs and secured licencing agreements.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • You will be educated to degree level or equivalent, or have equivalent experience. Ideally these qualifications and/or experience will have been gained in a life science discipline.
  • You will have experience of working within a research, commercialisation or knowledge exchange capacity with experience writing reports and business cases.
  • Knowledge of how intellectual property is protected and managed.
  • Experience of negotiating commercial agreements in a pragmatic way.
  • You will be able to demonstrate experience of managing complex projects; building strong relationships with business support networks; effective client management and relationship building.
  • You will have outstanding verbal and written communication skills; be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders; and be able to formally present to business audiences at network meetings and events.
  • Be self-motivated and have good time management and organisational skills: be able to define priorities and work flexibly and effectively under pressure to meet demanding (and sometimes conflicting) deadlines, within set time / financial constraints.
