Role Description


The Department of Physics is at the forefront of pioneering global research and technological advancement in our world leading research centres, focused around biophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and plasma physics and fusion energy at the York Plasma Institute. The York nuclear physics group ( is one of the largest groups in the UK, with 14 academic staff leading a range of experimental and theory programmes.  The group is diverse, investigating strongly interacting matter over a wide range of distance scales - from quarks, through atomic nuclei to astrophysical objects such as neutron stars. In our hadron physics research we exploit intense electromagnetic beam facilities, with experimental programmes at the CrystalBall at MAMI ( and with CLAS12 at Jefferson Laboratory ( We also lead R&D and programme development for next-generation facilities, including the Kaon beam facility (KLF) at Jefferson Lab and the Electron-Ion collider (EIC) to be sited at Brookhaven National Laboratory (


We are currently seeking a 2-year Postdoctoral Research Associate to underpin our group’s engagement with the EIC. As part of this the appointee will assess new technologies for next generation particle detector systems, including the commissioning of a new technology to enable room temperature nuclear-spin polarisation of liquid and gaseous media in the environment of intense particle beams. There will also be opportunity to contribute to the evolving physics programme and baseline detector designs for the EIC as well as to our existing programmes at Jefferson Lab and MAMI.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD in Nuclear or Particle Physics - or equivalent experience
  • Experience of data analysis and simulation of particle detector systems
