Role Description

Department

The Social Policy Research Unit (SPRU) is a multi-disciplinary centre with an international reputation for applied health and social care research and generating evidence relevant to policy, service organisation and delivery and practice.  It is located in the university’s Department of Social Policy and Social Work. SPRU is one of the hubs of the National Institute for Health Research’s School for Social Care Research. 

Role

You will be part of a small team working on a research project concerned with older people’s and family members’ understanding of, and engagement with, a social care intervention called reablement. The objective of the research is to create a resource which Local Authorities (and their partners) can use to identify and address points on their referral and care pathways where understanding and engagement with reablement may be at risk, or can be increased. Implementation of the resource by local authorities will then be evaluated.  The project is grounded in principles of co-production with key stakeholder groups closely involved at all stages of the project. The post requires extensive experience of qualitative research methods and co-production.  You will play a key role in delivering and managing the day to day working of the project and making a significant contribution to all elements of the project.   

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have a first degree in a relevant social science or health/social care subject and a PhD in a relevant social or applied health science, or equivalent post-graduate research experience. You will have experience of conducting qualitative research and using focus group and interview methods.  You will have experience of public involvement in research and doing research with older people and/or health/social care professionals. You will understand how social care is currently provided in England, and its challenges, and/or concepts and theories relevant to understanding how and why people engage with health or social care interventions. You will have the relevant IT skills needed to manage and carry out a project using qualitative methods.  You are comfortable working independently and as part of a team.  You will have experience of assuming responsibility for tasks/activities within research projects. You will have successfully published in high quality, peer-reviewed publications and aspire to actively contribute to developing new research ideas and funding bids. You will have excellent communication skills, and experience of using these across the entire research process and with parties who may be involved in a study.
