Research Associate in atmospheric multiphase halogen chemistry



The Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) are recruiting a Research Associate to improve our understanding of tropospheric halogen chemistry in marine environments. Over the last decade halogens (I, Br, Cl) have been shown to play an important role in the chemistry of the troposphere especially over the oceans. The inclusion of halogen chemistry into chemical transport models has shown the global and regional significance of this chemistry. However, the representation of this chemistry is fairly simple, with multiphase chemistry implicitly represented by gas phase reactions. In this work, multiphase halogen chemistry will be represented explicitly within the model.

Funded by a NSF-NERC grant, you will conduct research supervised by Professor Mat Evans, as part of the wider Bermuda boundary Layer Experiment on the Atmospheric Chemistry of Halogens (BLEACH) project  with the University of Washington and University of Los Angeles. You will:

  • develop a new representation of multiphase halogen chemistry occurring within the marine boundary layer based on explicit representation of both gas and aerosol phase chemistry
  • evaluate this representation against observations collected by previous field campaigns and collected by the wider BLEACH project
  • explore the impact of the new representation of air quality and climate parameters


Where appropriate you will:

  • assist with identification and development of potential areas of research and research proposals.
  • provide guidance to other staff and students 
  • write up research results and disseminate them through publications
  • assist with undergraduate teaching in own area of expertise


Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • A first degree in physics, maths, chemistry, or related subject and a PhD in atmospheric science
  • Experience in changing and updating the chemistry scheme of a chemistry transport model
  • Experience of using observations to assess the performance of a chemistry transport model regionally and globally
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to write-up research work for publications and to present to conferences
  • Ability and experience to develop research objectives and carry out individual and collaborative projects, planning and prioritising own work in order to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work closely with others within a team environment and to work independently using own initiative with attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality research
