Role Description


XR Stories supports research and development for companies working on cutting-edge digital technologies in the Yorkshire and Humber region. We do this through a programme of funding, research collaboration and industry engagement. We work across film, TV, games, media arts, heritage, advertising and technology to champion a new future in storytelling. This programme of activity is a £15M investment by AHRCERDF, the University of York, the British Film Institute and Screen Yorkshire.   

We are seeking to appoint a research associate to help undertaken a new project on the geographies of virtual production in film and TV and assess the impact of XR Stories.


The research associate will join the Department of Theatre, Film, Television and Interactive media and work alongside a team of interdisciplinary researchers on XR Stories and the Screen Industries Growth Network. The role will provide research support for a project exploring the geographies of virtual production in the screen industries through desk-based and primary research. In addition, the research associate will contribute to assessing the economic impact of XR Stories for the screen industries in the Yorkshire and the Humber region and beyond.

The research associate will also be encouraged to contribute to the aims of XR Stories by developing their own research agenda. This will be done by undertaking and publishing research which enhances XR Stories and the individual’s contribution to work on the creative industries.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent experience in a field such as economic geography, sociology, media studies, film and TV studies, or business and management. You should have excellent knowledge of the creative industries and understand how the film and TV industries operate. The ability to undertake qualitative research (including interviews), desk-based research and some quantitative analysis.  In addition, you will have the ability to produce high quality work and pay close attention to detail, working both independently to solve problems and perform tasks, as well as working as part of an interdisciplinary research team.
