Role Description

The role
As Head of Software Development, you will lead the software development function in Digital Services and manage a team of around 30 technical professionals that develop the university’s complex software products and wide-ranging application estate.

You will be responsible for several service delivery teams that create high quality front end and integration services for staff and students. You will work closely with the Digital Services Projects Team to ensure service developments are resourced appropriately and with Development Team Leaders to define overall architecture and the software development lifecycle. You will coach teams and help the organisation to consolidate Agile approaches to development and service management.

You will assist the IT Services senior leadership team by providing guidance and recommendations regarding software development technologies, integration and related architecture.

You will oversee software development, vendor and partner relationship management and identify IT-related developments and emerging technologies that will enhance the University’s plans and initiatives for the future.

Your profile

  • Significant experience of leading a software development team in a highly pressurised, large complex environment
  • Ability to contribute to the strategic direction of the department and the services it runs
  • Budget, procurement and supplier management
  • An understanding of how teams develop and support services on AWS or other comparable Cloud platforms
  • A broad understanding of software development including integration and architecture
  • Experience in one or more of the frameworks used by the team is essential for the role: JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js/TypeScript, CloudFormation, CDK, React Native, React Redux.
  • Service development using Agile methods such as Scrum and Kanban would be advantageous
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience

 Communication

  • You will be a driven and dynamic leader who is experienced at engaging, challenging, negotiating and influencing at all levels
  • High level, proven inter-personal and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to lead, and motivate a team of technical professionals
  • Adaptable and flexible with the ability to form strong working relationships with stakeholders across the organisation at all levels
