Research Associate in high throughput 2D-infrared screening 

Applications are invited for a research associate to work in the group of Prof Neil Hunt (https://www.york.ac.uk/chemistry/staff/academic/h-n/neil-hunt/#research-content).

The project is funded by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council Innovation Partnership Scheme and will develop high throughput screening methods based on ultrafast 2D-IR spectroscopy for applications in drug design and biomedical diagnostics. The project will involve a collaboration with our project partners the STFC Central Laser Facility (CLF) (https://www.clf.stfc.ac.uk/Pages/home.aspx), based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, global biopharmaceutical company UCB Pharma (https://www.ucb.com/) and medical technology SME Dxcover Ltd (https://www.dxcover.com/ ).

Role

The post-holder will be based in York and will focus upon the design and construction of high throughput liquid sample delivery methods needed to enable measurement of 2D-IR spectra of protein solutions and biofluids in around one minute per sample. The post-holder will work to implement these methods on laser systems at the STFC CLF and undertake testing and evaluation in collaboration with project partners.

You will conduct research under the supervision of Professor Neil Hunt, work collaboratively as part of a team including chemists at the University of York and partners based at a national laser facility and in companies in the pharmaceutical and biomedical sectors.  You will assist in identifying and developing potential areas of research and developing proposals for independent or collaborative research projects. You will provide guidance to other staff and students as required and assist with undergraduate teaching.

 

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics or related discipline.
  • Expert knowledge of:
    • Research techniques and methodologies related to molecular spectroscopy.
    • Design and implementation of sample handling systems such as flow cells or microfluidics.
  • Ability to produce high quality publications, using high level analytical skills.
  • Ability to disseminate your work effectively through oral presentations at conferences or in other appropriate events.
  • Ability to be an effective team member and to forge meaningful relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Committed to personal development and keeping your knowledge and skills up to date.
