Role Description

University of York Management School

This is a new fixed term full time post in the UYMS/SPSW department, which has been created to support the development of departmental online distance learning programmes. 

The post will provide first-line user support to staff responding to queries on the School’s online learning programmes, Canvas learning management system and the wider e-learning tool-set which we use. 

Provision of staff support will involve instructional design help and guidance for programme teams using the e-learning tools for building new online modules and updating existing modules in Canvas.  

The postholder will liaise closely with the University’s Programme Design and Learning Technology (PDLT) team and York Online Support colleagues to develop guidance and support resources for staff involved in online learning programme development, ensuring consistency and quality of learning technology support in line with University policy and practice.  

Role

The post requires a combination of good technological skills, knowledge of instructional design principles, awareness of course and user administration processes and expertise in delivering training and support services. Creative approaches to problem solving and the ability to learn and apply new skills quickly will be necessary as well as good organisational skills, excellent interpersonal skills and above all, a strong commitment to customer service.

With the University Strategy identifying online distance learning as a key priority for investment and growth, and in line with the departmental business plan for the development of new online programmes in conjunction with a commercial partner, this support post needs to be filled as soon as possible.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Good Honours degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Knowledge of the underlying educational processes in using learning technologies to enhance student learning and academic practice in higher education.
  • Awareness of e-learning standards and accessibility, disability, copyright and licensing legislation for e-learning.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to explain pedagogic and technical issues clearly to people at all levels of technical and academic knowledge.
  • Ability to liaise with a wide variety of clients and to demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to plan own work and responsibilities over the short and medium term, with an awareness of longer term issues.
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and as a member of a number of different teams.
