Role Description


The Communications Officer plays a crucial part in the Office of Philanthropic Partnerships and Alumni (OPPA). OPPA works with an international community of donors and alumni, including individual philanthropists, family trusts, foundations and corporates, and our global alumni community of over 140,000 graduates of the University of York.

OPPA is responsible for:

  • Philanthropic Partnerships – providing support to students, our academic community and priority programmes at York via gifts, grants and donations.
  • York Unlimited – our ambitious fundraising and volunteering campaign.
  • York Global Alumni Association, the official alumni community for the University of York. You are considered to be an alum of the University if you have graduated or retired from the University.

OPPA works with academics across the University, the University board and donors to secure funding for innovative projects that tackle global challenges such as food sustainability, inequality and mental health, and for scholarships that open up a new world of opportunity for our global student community


You will be part of the communications team and will be responsible for managing all social media channels, producing engaging content and communicating effectively with our audiences. You will deliver digital communications including social media, website management and email comms, with responsibility for our international audiences.

You will bring drive, ambition and enthusiasm to help support our international engagement plan and the University’s strategic philanthropic campaign - York Unlimited.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • You will have experience working as part of a communications team and have skills in managing social media platforms including Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
  • Experience working with international audiences and in a fundraising or alumni relations office is desirable but not essential.

This role is a maternity cover for 12 months.
