The Department of Physics is looking for a Research Technician to provide expertise in supporting research laboratories in the department. As part of a small team, you will provide technical and scientific support to research projects and instrumentation across our wide range of research labs. You will facilitate the maintenance, development, modification and repairs to a wide variety of standard and bespoke research equipment whilst providing technical support to laboratory operations. The role presents an exciting opportunity to be involved in pioneering global research, technologies and supporting teaching activities in a Russell Group University.

Work is diverse and includes: Laser optics, bio-physics research laboratory operations, vacuum system maintenance and repair, vacuum leak detection, use of solvents and acids, health and safety management / implementation, training, cryogenic support, operation / maintenance / repair of research equipment, pressurised gas support / installation, coordination with external service providers, experiment design and departmental research laboratory operation support.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • HNC, HND, Degree or equivalent in appropriate science discipline or appropriate experience;
  • RSciTech / EngTech or willingness to work towards these or equivalent professional qualifications;
  • Knowledge of Scientific Research Laboratory Operations;
  • Experience of working using own initiative and as part of a team;
  • Ability to plan and take responsibility for own work using initiative, seeking advice where necessary;
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with staff and students.
