The Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Electronic Engineering are at the forefront of pioneering global research and technological advancement in our world leading research centres. The University is offering an apprenticeship programme that will provide a unique opportunity to join the University of York and undertake a nationally recognised qualification whilst working in a challenging and exciting sector.


This is an exciting opportunity to work across the procurement and stores facilities at the University of York, who offer a service which includes the purchase of consumables, reagents and equipment used in scientific research and teaching.

The apprenticeship scheme provides a perfect way to earn a wage while you gain vital work experience within a work environment, and study towards an Advanced Certificate in Procurement and Supplies Operations Level: 3 Apprenticeship Standard: Procurement and Supply Assistant.

You will learn, assist and work as part of the biology, chemistry and physics/electronic engineering stores teams, serving at the stores counter, receipting goods, processing internal and external purchase orders, managing stock, processing specialist goods such as gas cylinders and hazardous waste and become proficient in the use of procurement software. You will also attend a relevant day release course to gain the qualification in Procurement and Supplies Operations Level: 3.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • GCSE Maths, or equivalent qualifications;
  • GCSE English, or equivalent qualifications;
  • Active listening and verbal communication skills for effective interaction with all team members;
  • Taking an active part in a team, helping colleagues as required to ensure tasks are completed on time and to required standards;
  • Willingness to attend college on a day release basis;
  • Willingness to learn, gain knowledge and acquire the relevant skills.
