Department

The Department of Economics and Related Studies is ranked among the top 100 economics departments in the world and top 10 in the UK.  As one of the largest economics departments in the country, we offer a great diversity of research expertise and research-led teaching.  Our academic community of staff, students and visitors is intellectually vibrant and international in perspective.

We are seeking to appoint a Reader in Economics and Related Studies, preferably beginning in September 2021.  You will consolidate and extend the international reputation of the department within a world-class, vibrant, research environment.

We are particularly interested in applicants with interests in the fields of development economics, economic history, health economics, labour economics and/or macroeconomics, and welcome candidates with a particular interest in developing and extending our MSc level public policy programmes/modules and student recruitment. 

We particularly encourage applications from women, who are currently under-represented at this level.

With a strong commitment to the promotion of excellence in research, teaching and learning, you will contribute to and complement our existing research strength with a proven track record in research, and publications in leading peer-reviewed journals and other publications as appropriate.

You will lead lectures and seminars to undergraduate and postgraduate students, set and mark assessments, and supervise students.

You will be able to demonstrate substantial intellectual distinction with a sustained contribution in research and scholarship, that bestows considerable external recognition.

Role

  • Generate new research approaches; identify, adapt, develop and use research methodologies/techniques.
  • Lead on/contribute to the production of research outputs/outcomes.
  • Publish high impact research in quality journals (as sole author or in collaboration).  Devise, direct and develop research projects generating external funding.
  • Responsibility for overseeing, developing and promoting innovative teaching and learning approaches, creating interest, understanding and enthusiasm among students.
  • Lead the design, development and delivery of a range of academic modules, ensuring they comply with the quality standards and regulations of the Department/University.
  • Undertake effectively a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD in Economics or related discipline (or equivalent professional experience).  An appropriate academic professional and teaching qualification.

The ability to:

  • Demonstrate major research leadership, internally and externally.  Motivate colleagues in teaching and research.
  • Teach at any level within area of expertise, and across a range of subjects at a more introductory level, demonstrating highly developed oral communication skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills to write publications or disseminate research findings.  Appropriately skilled in the use of IT.
  • Write/deliver presentations at conferences or exhibit work at other appropriate events internally and externally.
  • Extend, transform, and apply knowledge from scholarship; proven ability to take a leading role in supervising research students.

A proven track record in:

  • Research with publications in leading peer-reviewed journals.
  • Significant presentations at international conferences (invited or plenary).
  • Teaching and learning in HE at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • A leadership role in teaching or research.
  • Successful planning and course design, using different delivery techniques to enthuse/engage students.
