Role Description

Department

The Department of Physics is looking to appoint an Administrator to provide a range of support to colleagues.

The Department of Physics is at the forefront of pioneering global research and technological advancement in our world leading research centres, focused around biophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and plasma physics and fusion energy at the York Plasma Institute. As a Department we strive to provide a working environment which allows all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish, and to excel. We aim to ensure that there is a supportive and egalitarian culture at all levels and across all staff groups. We promote good practice and a strong culture of equality in higher education, and are proud of our Juno Champion Award and Athena SWAN Silver Award.

Role

The role currently encompasses PA support to the Head of Department, administrative support for HR activities (including: recruitment, induction, contract changes, absence monitoring, leavers, casual workers etc), support for events, coordination of staff communications, and secretarial support to various committees. As the University embarks on a journey of organisational change, the responsibilities of this role may change, and so we are seeking someone who is adaptable and flexible.  For this reason, the role is offered initially as a 12 month contract.

  • Experience of working in a varied administrative role effectively balancing competing priorities
  • Experience of providing an excellent standard of customer service to a range of stakeholders, including excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A high degree of attention to detail; able to use initiative; good problem-solving skills; organised yet flexible
  • Commitment to work in and contribute to an environment of change and continuous improvement
  • Knowledge of HR policies and procedures, experience of handling confidential information, and the ability to create/maintain web pages and social media are all desirable.

Interview date: 14 June 2021
