Role Description

The University of York exists for public good. Enquiring minds, inspirational teaching, pioneering research, global ambition, local commitment and social purpose are the foundations which underpin that commitment at the University of York.

We are a high-performing Russell Group university where talented students, inspiring lecturers and world-class researchers thrive. We provide exceptional learning experiences that stay with our students for the rest of their lives, enabling them to flourish within and beyond their studies. Since our foundation in 1963, York’s focus on academic excellence has resulted in a strong reputation across the globe. We were ranked 16th in the Guardian’s Best University UK Universities 2021 League Table, and in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 we were ranked in the Top 40 in the world for Arts and Humanities and in the top 100 for Social Sciences.

Our exciting new strategy towards 2030 will be underpinned by a bold digital ambition and we are now looking to appoint an exceptional IT and digital leader as our new Director of IT Services. This high-profile position is sat within a new directorate bringing together IT Services, Estates and Campus Service, and Commercial Services to deliver the vision of ‘providing outstanding work, study, research facilities, and facilities to enhance the student experience, on campus and online’.  This large service of 165 people has a strong internal reputation for delivery; however, we realise that we must go further and quicker in delivering a digital transformation strategy and roadmap.

We are looking for an empowering and collaborative leader with significant IT and digital experience, someone who can bring a persuasive change management and visionary leadership approach in driving a fundamental step change in the provision of digital and information services across the institution.  We are keen to explore applications from across sectors with candidates able to demonstrate a proven track record of innovation and leadership in a related and complex environment that is increasingly open to market forces. Importantly, this is a high-profile leadership role, candidates will need to demonstrate a passion to deliver the university’s aims and objectives, coupled with an enthusiasm for all that it is seeking to achieve and to role model the university's values in all aspects of the role.

Closing date: midday, Friday 23 April 2021.

We particularly welcome applications from female candidates, and candidates from minority ethnic backgrounds, who are under-represented at senior management level in the institution.

The University is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community  – a place where we can all be ourselves and succeed on merit. We offer a range of family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, staff engagement forums, campus facilities and services to support staff from different backgrounds.
