We are looking for a highly qualified full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the group of Dr Katherine Bridge based in the Department of Biology at the University of York. The Bridge laboratory's research focuses on understanding the biology of Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (HIF), a master transcriptional regulator which confers a key role in normal and malignant cell biology. By using models of blood stem cell (HSC) biology in both mice and primary human samples, our group is characterising the multifaceted nature of HIF and developing tools to redirect its malignant activity in cancer cells toward disease-suppressing functions. This position will be focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms underpinning the regulation of HIF in normal and malignant HSCs, in both the mouse and human settings. It also benefits from the active collaboration of the Bridge group with industrial partners to develop therapies to modulate HIF function in malignant HSCs as a potential novel approach for treating haematological malignancies. The position spans the application of molecular biology techniques, proteomics/transcriptomics, in vitro functional assays and in vivo studies, giving the successful candidate an excellent opportunity to develop a research portfolio with a breadth of experimental expertise to excel in the fields of cancer and haematology research.
The postholder will benefit from interactions with a network of UK scientists around the themes of hypoxia, blood stem cell biology and the myeloproliferative neoplasms. They will drive independent projects, but also work closely with other lab members and assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals. The postholder will be expected to write up research results for dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and will be encouraged to participate in public engagement and science outreach activities. Opportunities for mentorship and additional collaborations will be available and encouraged.
The successful candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent research experience in molecular cell biology within the field of cancer cell or stem cell biology with specific expertise in primary cell culture, flow cytometry, chromatin-immunoprecipitation, DNA/RNA analysis, protein-protein interaction assays and molecular biology. Experience in HIF / transcription factor biology and animal models would be advantageous. They will have knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies. The successful candidate will have highly developed communication skills and the ability to write up research work for publication. They must be able to develop research objectives and conduct individual and collaborative research projects. They should be able to contribute to the process of securing funds. The successful candidate should have demonstrable research experience and should have presented their research at national and international conferences.
This position is funded by the Kay Kendall Leukaemia Fund. The post is full-time, fixed term for 2 years with the possibility of extension and salary will be in the range £32,817- £40,322 per annum.
