Role Description

Department

Creative Media Labs, a project funded by the European Regional Development Fund, is establishing an immersive and interactive media lab in York for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) working in the creative screen industries in the Leeds City Region to access state-of-the-art equipment to enable them to undertake R&D and innovation activities.

Creative Media Labs is part of the XR Stories project. XR Stories was established in October 2018 with a £5.5m grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and match funding from the University and from industry partners. Led by the University of York, in partnership with Screen Yorkshire and the British Film Institute, it will support research and development for and with the Yorkshire screen industries. It brings together film, TV, games and digital media businesses from across the region, in collaboration with leading national and international companies and organisations, and a consortium of regional universities. The focus of the research and development is storytelling: Creative Media Labs will harness the latest digital technologies – and especially immersive and interactive tools and techniques – to develop innovative and commercially viable models for the next generation of screen storytelling.

Role

The CML Creative Producers will be critical members of the XR Stories team: working closely with SMEs in our cluster to realise commercial outcomes from immersive and interactive digital storytelling.

The roles will involve a mix of creative development, project facilitation, development of business cases, and helping our industry partners transform initial ideas into fundable project proposals and meaningful and manageable projects.

They will be responsible for delivering substantial support to a portfolio of companies over 3-12 month periods; encouraging and enabling SMEs in the Yorkshire screen industries to undertake relevant innovation and R&D activities.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • Manage the scoping, planning, initiation, development, review and completion processes of the projects for which they are responsible, to achieve stated deliverables and milestones
  • Commission and lead multidisciplinary teams for the projects for which they are responsible, providing vision and strategic direction
  • Act as a representative and ambassador for XR Stories in relationships with key stakeholders, internal departments and external bodies
  • Develop and maintain agreed project plans, defining criteria for control and management of projects and assessment of risk
  • Maintain professional contacts, interest and knowledge in the development of immersive and interactive storytelling in the screen industries
  • Contribute to the process of building a network of stakeholders across Yorkshire and nationally and internationally, and turning contacts and leads into actual R&D projects and securing other funding and investment
  • Lead and manage XR Stories events designed to raise interest in our support and activities
  • Lead and manage the process of horizon-scanning, identifying state-of-the-art research and creative practice, working with other members of the XR Stories team as appropriate; and building a resource that can inform project development
  • Generate ideas for new projects, prepare project briefs/plans and obtain the appropriate support
  • Undertake other appropriate duties as agreed with the Director and/or Programme Manager of XR Stories

Interview date: 12 April 2021
