We are looking to recruit a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the group of Dr Andrew Holding within the Department of Biology. The Holding group is investigating steroid hormone receptors, in particular their roles in driving the growth of breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Outcomes for many patients are favourable. However, once metastasis occurs, treatment is much less effective, and patient survival becomes less likely. Understanding and preventing metastasis of breast cancer is therefore an unmet medical need and would hugely benefit these patients.
Recent research has shown while steroids are essential to treat inflammation in patients, they also promote survival of cancer cells in breast tissues. This leads to an increased incidence of cancer cells spreading to other parts of the body.
This position will be focused on understanding the molecular networks governing the difference responses to glucocorticoid steroids by breast epithelial cells and T-cell cells using combined single-cell sequencing and CRISPR techniques. Understanding the mechanisms responsible will be the first step towards developing drug strategies to enable clinicians to keep the beneficial effect of glucocorticoid steroids in reducing inflammation, whilst preventing the negative effects associated with breast cancer metastasis.

The postholder will join a newly-established research group focused on understanding how the glucocorticoid receptor drives breast cancer metastasis. They will drive independent projects, but also work closely with other lab members and assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals.
The postholder will be expected to undertake research and analyse and write up research results for dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations. They will participate in public engagement and science outreach activities. Opportunities for mentorship and additional collaborations will be available and encouraged. They may assist with undergraduate training or teaching in their own area of expertise.
The successful candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent with research experience in either steroid hormone receptors, breast cancer or related field. Ideally the candidate will have expertise in primary cell culture, next-generation sequencing, lentiviral vectors, and flow-cytometry. Additional knowledge of bioinformatics, single-cell sequencing and CRISPR-based methods would be advantageous. The successful candidate will have highly developed communication skills and the ability to write up research work for publication. They must be able to develop research objectives and conduct individual and collaborative research projects. They should be able to contribute to the process of securing funds. The successful candidate should have demonstrable research experience and should have presented their research at national and international conferences.
This position is funded by the BBSRC. The post is full-time, fixed term for 3 years with the possibility of extension.
