Role Description

Facilities Services

Cleaning Services sits within Facilities Services at the University of York.  The team has responsibility for all aspects of residential and non-residential cleaning across the University.  Our role is 'to provide services and facilities to the core business of the University and the wider University community’. We monitor service levels, ensuring that we deliver these safely, to a high quality, and in a timely manner to meet the University’s operational needs.

Successful candidates will join our team of Essential Workers.  As such, the post holders would be expected to be on site and to carry out their duties.

Examples of patterns of work currently available are:

  • Part time at 30 hours per week, with a working pattern of Sundays 07:00 to 15:00 and between 10:00 and 18:00 Monday to Wednesday.
  • Part time at 30 hours per week, with a working pattern of Monday to Friday 07:00 to 13:30.

Whilst regular hours of work are in place, there is requirement for cover to be provided across any 5/7 working days including evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Any successful candidate will become one of our Essential Workers.  As such, you will be expected to be on site and to carry out your duties.


The Cleaning Services Rapid Response Team (RRT) provide a reactive cleaning service to all areas of the University and outlying premises. Team members also carry out planned deep cleaning project work across the University campus. Their work includes the use of specialised industrial cleaning equipment and at times they are required to work at heights.

The (RRT) primarily undertakes driving duties of lightweight University vehicles and commercial vans around the estate as required and are responsible for furniture moves and room set-ups around campus. It is therefore essential that members of this team hold a full UK driving licence and have the ability to drive a high sided LWB transit type van.

The RRT team is in daily contact with students, staff, contractors and guests. In addition to all our RRT duties, there will be a requirement for experience and aptitude in minor maintenance work. 

Regular working hours are assigned, however, in order to maintain flexibility the team are at times and when operationally necessary, required to work flexibly between the hours of 07:00 and 20:00 on any 5 days out of 7 including weekends.  Hours of work are confirmed in advance via a rota.

  Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Full driving licence
  • Ability to carry out significant manual handling duties
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a range of colleagues and customers
