Role Description

Hull York Medical School is seeking to appoint a Chief Operating Officer (COO).  This is the senior managerial position in the School, who works closely with the Dean of the School and the Executive Group, and who is responsible for the oversight of all operational activity.

This is an exciting time to join Hull York Medical School.  Following the Department of Health initiative to expand the number of medical school places in England, the Hull York Medical School was awarded an additional 90 places a year from 2020, representing a 70% increase in places. For our School, this expansion of undergraduate medical places is a significant milestone in our history.  The School is therefore undergoing considerable change, which will continue until academic year 22/23.

The COO is responsible to the Dean for the overall operation of the School and for provision of senior level advice on policy, procedure and practice within the School. The appointee will be accountable for leading and managing the team of support personnel and maintaining an efficient and effective financial, administrative and technical infrastructure that will support the achievement of the School’s vision. They will play a pivotal role in ensuring that the  School’s administrative systems work with those of the two Universities in a cost-effective manner.

The appointed candidate will work closely with the Dean, the Deputy Dean and senior academic managers and will be a member of the Executive Group, Management Board and the Strategic Planning Group. They will therefore have a central role in the strategic and operational management and development of the School.

We are seeking to appoint an experienced, values-driven operations manager who has experience and skill in managing complex organisations.  The appointee will work across the School’s sites, principally the University of Hull campus and the University of York campus.  For an informal discussion, please contact Professor Una Macleod, Dean, Hull York Medical School,

Closing Date: 17 January 2021
Interview Date: 18 February 2021*

* Candidates shortlisted for interview will be invited to participate in a selection assessment prior to the interview date.
