Role Description

Hull York Medical School is a different kind of medical school. The School was established in 2003 – combining York’s strengths in biological science and health sciences and Hull’s large clinical base and expertise in clinical research. Since it was established, it has been inspiring doctors and academic leaders of the future with the research, skills and knowledge they need to look at things differently and advance improvements in healthcare around the world. We are currently undergoing one of the biggest transformations in our history, following the allocation of 90 additional medical school places as part of HEFCE’s 2017 Expansion of Undergraduate Medical Education, which represented a 70% increase in home places to 220 in 2019.

We are now seeking an outstanding medical educator to lead our flagship MB BS programme and help the School to maintain an international reputation for quality, innovation and a growing range of programmes. We anticipate making an appointment at Professorial or Senior Lecturer level, on a Teaching and Scholarship contract. An honorary NHS appointment will be anticipated, where the successful applicant is a practising clinician.

The Programme Director will contribute significantly to the overall development of Hull York Medical School as a leading medical school, committed to delivering exceptional medical education and equipping our graduates with the medical knowledge and analytical, problem-solving and communication skills needed to deliver outstanding healthcare.

The School’s innovative and distinctive MB BS curriculum includes a problem and enquiry-based approach to learning, early and sustained clinical experience and balanced teaching across all health sectors and a wide range of special interest learning opportunities. The Programme Director will lead an ongoing process of curriculum enhancement, to ensure the MB BS programme is dynamic and responds to internal and external drivers for change, including responding to quality assurance data. With direct leadership and line management responsibility for several senior staff members, the successful candidate will be a member of the School’s Executive Group and will work closely with the School’s academic and clinical leadership and professional support staff.

Candidates will bring strong medical educational expertise that will complement and enhance the School’s educational strategy and goals, as well as a contemporary understanding of NHS and healthcare education structures, strategy and practices. With a talent for designing and developing innovative teaching programmes and experience of senior academic leadership, they will demonstrate integrity, openness, honesty and a strong commitment to equality and diversity.
