Role Description


The Finance Department is part of the administrative structure of the University. It comprises over 60 members of staff located around the campus. Finance has recently reorganised into 4 main activity areas –

Management Accounting: covering Faculty, Department and Professional Services reporting.

Accounting Services: covering corporate management and statutory reporting and company reporting

Finance Shared Services: covering Fees and Cash, Payroll, Payments, systems and Business Analysis

Procurement: covering the University’s professional procurement service.

The Department is responsible for providing decision support and advice for management and budget holders both at a corporate level and also for academic faculties and departments and professional support services. Financial processes are carried out across most of the University’s departments. We provide expertise and oversight for practitioners and processes.

Finance ensures that funding is in place to support the University’s short and long term business requirements, including a planned campus redevelopment programme which will take place over the next 10 – 15 years.

Finance also provide transaction services to support our students, staff and departments covering purchase invoice processing and payment, fees and other accounts receivable, cash services, systems support, process review and payroll.


We are seeking a high calibre Management Accountant to join our Science Faculty finance team. The Science Faculty has 10 key departments, around 7000 students, a number of dedicated research facilities and research centres with total future predicted annual turnover of £170m, £75m attributable to research.  You will perform the key role of Management Accountant and oversee the finances for a number of academic departments and be an active contributing member of the Science Faculty finance team.

Your primary place of work will be in the Academic Departments you support. You will work closely with Department Management Teams, Heads of Department and Departmental Managers and you will directly line-manage members of the wider Science Faculty finance team.

You will be a technically competent individual with excellent communication skills and excellent line management skills. You will have the ability to liaise with a wide range of academic and professional support staff across the University with differing financial understanding, in the production of high-quality management information and financial plans. As a positive 'can-do' individual you will work flexibly to offer a consistently high-quality level of customer service, whilst successfully delivering on reporting deadlines.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Qualified Accountant (for example ACA, ACCA or CIMA)
  • Excellent knowledge of finance systems, processes and regulations
  • Experience of accounting for research and other grant funded activities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of direct staff management
  • Ability to establish and nurture productive partnerships both internally and externally
