A fixed term postdoctoral appointment is available for up to 24 months in the Condensed Matter Physics Institute, part of the Department of Physics, to work with the Quantum Transport and Spintronics team, on the Royal Society funded project “Spintronics in Two-Dimensional Layered Materials”. We are seeking an ambitious theoretical researcher who will be responsible for research on this project, developing novel insights into the wealth of quantum phenomena in atomically thin crystals and their heterostructures. 

You will be embedded in the diverse and thriving environment offered by the York campus with ample opportunity to interact and collaborate with related theoretical and experimental groups. Your principal role will be to develop theoretical and/or computational approaches to uncover emergent interfacial magnetic phenomena, accounting for realistic effects of disorder and strain. The highly-tuneable properties of two-dimensional materials offer unprecedented opportunities for fundamental and applied research, including the theoretical discovery of topological quantum phases and the harnessing of chiral spin textures for practical applications in low-power information processing and quantum computing. 

The Department of Physics is at the forefront of pioneering global research and technological advancement in our world leading research centres, focused around biophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and plasma physics and fusion energy at the York Plasma Institute. You will work in collaboration with Dr Aires Ferreira and other project partners and members, including PhD students. Visits to project partners within the KITE network ( are envisaged. 

Role holders will be required to undertake some or all of the duties below. 

  • to conduct individual and collaborative research projects, duties to include: use of appropriate research techniques and methods, compiling and analysing data, writing up of research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations;
  • to provide guidance as required to research students, and any other students who may be assisting with the research; to assist with the development of student research skills, and be expected to contribute to the assessment of student knowledge in the context of supervision duties;
  • to assist in the identification of potential areas of research, as well as manage and direct the project as opportunities allow.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • A PhD in theoretical or computational condensed matter physics or a related subject is essential.
  • Highly developed communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds.
  • Experience of writing up research work for publication.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
  • Experience of using numerical techniques or many-body/field-theoretical methods in the context of condensed matter physics. 

The post is fixed term for a period of up to 24 months, and will be available from March 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
