Role Description


The University’s Finance Department is a team of circa 70 staff who produce the Annual Accounts, the University’s medium-term plan and quarterly forecasts which are reported to the Board, Finance Committee and Council for consideration and approval.  The team also produce management accounts for all the academic and professional service departments, capital projects and subsidiaries for consideration by the Planning Committee and the departments.  Payroll, purchasing, student fees and other cash receipts and procurement processes and all managed and resourced within the department.  Finally, the University’s financial regulations, capital procedures, travel and expenses policies are managed by the Department.  These activities, with a University with a turnover of over £400m requires highly skilled staff and an efficient and effective functioning department.


We are offering an attractive employment opportunity within an established and respected team, along with the chance to attain a nationally-recognised qualification (Professional Accounting or Taxation Technician apprenticeship) with a local training provider, to be confirmed. We have 2 positions available. 

These 2 positions support the Professional Services Management Accounts team with the production of accurate and regular management information relating to the various operations and activities within the Professional Services Directorates.

The post holders will contribute to the effective and efficient management and co-ordination of the day-to-day financial operations as well as being the first point of contact for financial queries and requests. The post holders will support the Accountant and Management Accountant in the production of forecasts and budgets.

Employment is not guaranteed at the end of the apprenticeship. It is, however, anticipated that the role holder will gain the skills and qualifications required to apply for relevant University job vacancies, and will possess a qualification recognised by the industry as being fully qualified in the appointed trade.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed


  • A general education to include 5 GCSE passes at Grade C or above (including Maths and English), or an equivalent educational qualification, or relevant experience


  • Accounting Principles and concepts
  • Knowledge of a full range of MS office applications, particularly Excel

 Skills, abilities and competencies

  • Ability to work with large amounts of complex data
  • Strong IT skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to provide detailed advice and guidance on specialist defined processes and procedures to internal and external contacts
  • A high degree of attention to detail
  • Able to work as part of a team or individually to tight deadlines


  • Experience of working in a finance department or similar corporate function
  • Experience of analysing data and presenting summary information in a clear and concise format
  • Of working to tight and conflicting deadlines
  • Experience of working with financial systems and software
  • Demonstrate an interest in management accounting and budgeting
