The Department of Physics at the University of York has been awarded funding by the European Union as part of the Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Training Network (ETN) entitled “Cold Opto-Magnetism for Random Access Devices” (COMRAD). This vacancy offers a 3 year, fully-funded PhD supervised by Dr Richard Evans.

The main responsibility of the role is to conduct research, performing atomistic spin simulations of ultrafast magnetic processes. You will develop novel approaches to atomistic level models, removing the phenomenological damping constant, based on simulation of the electronic heat bath. This will require advanced models of the s-d exchange interaction parameterised by ab-initio calculations and introduction of the photon/electron/spin interaction. You will apply the model to the understanding of ultrafast reversal induced by combinations of laser/current pulses. You will provide support to other relevant research projects, undertaking research and training within the overall COMRAD programme, and assist with the day to day operation of the projects.  You will assist in writing articles, papers, reports, etc. as appropriate and participate in the dissemination of research findings internally and externally at seminars, workshops and conferences.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

Undergraduate degree in Physics (or related relevant subject); minimum 2:1 or equivalent grade

Willingness to undertake a programme of learning and development, in the form of a PhD

For those applicants for whom English is not their first language, you will need to meet or exceed the University of York’s requirements for Physics PhD entry

Knowledge of condensed matter physics and basic magnetism and of a range of relevant research techniques and methodologies

Understanding of relevant health & safety practices

Ability to undertake academic research conducting numerical simulations of magnetic materials

Excellent IT skills, including the use of word processing, presentation and data analysis software

Ability to assist in the supervision of student projects and to provide support to staff and any students who may be assisting with the research

Excellent written and oral communication

Ability to develop internal and external contacts

Ability to work as part of a team and also to work independently using own initiative

Experience of undertaking a research project in a relevant subject area
