Department

We are looking for a highly qualified full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the group of Dr David Kent based in the Department of Biology at the University of York (https://www.york.ac.uk/biology/research/infection-immunity/david-kent/). The Kent laboratory's research focuses on understanding normal and malignant blood stem cell biology in both mouse models and primary human samples. We have recently pioneered approaches in single cell biology which quantify and track normal blood stem cells in humans (Lee-Six et al., Nature 2018), link single stem cell function to single cell gene expression (Wilson et al, Cell Stem Cell2015; Nestorowa et al., Blood2016; Shepherd et al., Blood 2018) and determined that the order of mutation acquisition impacts disease evolution and clinical features of blood cancers (Ortmann et al., N Eng. J. Med. 2015).

This position will be focused on understanding the molecular networks governing the expansion of blood stem cells (Wilkinson et al., Nature 2019) outside the body in both the mouse and human settings. The successful candidate will join a newly funded collaborative project between our group and the groups of Professor Bertie Göttgens (Cambridge) and Drs. Satoshi Yamazaki and Yosuke Tanaka (Japan).

Role

The postholder will benefit from interactions with a network of Japanese and UK scientists around the theme of blood stem cell biology. They will drive independent projects, but also work closely with other lab members and assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals.

The postholder will be expected to undertake research and analyse and write up research results for dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations. They will  participate in public engagement and science outreach activities. Opportunities for mentorship and additional collaborations will be available and encouraged. They may assist with undergraduate training or teaching in their own area of expertise.     

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

The successful candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent research experience in mouse and/or human stem cell biology with specific expertise in stem cell isolation, primary cell culture, mouse models, bone marrow transplantation, and molecular biology. They will have knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies. Additional knowledge of bioinformatics and flow cytometry would be advantageous. The successful candidate will have highly developed communication skills and the ability to write up research work for publication. They must be able to develop research objectives  and conduct individual and collaborative research projects. They should be able to contribute to the process of securing funds. The successful candidate should have demonstrable research experience and should have presented their research at national and international conferences.

This position is funded by the UK Medical Research Council.  The post is full-time, fixed term for 2 years with the possibility of extension and salary will be in the range £32,817- £40,322 per annum.
