Role Description


The University of York’s Trials Unit in the Department of Health Sciences is seeking an enthusiastic web developer to work on bespoke patient management systems that support clinical trials.

You will primarily be developing systems written in ASP.NET, which are currently being shifted from VB WebForms to C# MVC technology. You will also work with SQL Server to create, query and update data. This is a particularly interesting time in our development as we are currently moving our applications and services into .NET Core. By joining as we design our approach, you’ll have the opportunity to influence its implementation.

Following a recent expansion across other areas of the Clinical Trials Unit, the development team is seeing an increase in the demand for bespoke web based systems that support the management of clinical trials. This role requires technical expertise, creativity and strategic thinking. There is scope for initiative and innovation, coupled with access to many of the latest technologies. Due to the nature of the role there is a variety of work available, and if there is a particular area of development you would like to specialise in this could be possible.


Day-to-day activities will include:

  • The design and development of web-based systems using ASP.NET and SQL.
  • The design and development of new functionality.
  • Providing technical and programming support for colleagues using our databases and the data from these systems for monitoring and research purposes.
  • Contributing to system documentation and best practice guidelines.

Additionally, unique functionality is often required for different clinical trials. Past projects that the development team have worked on include:

  • Building a method of using text messages to send and receive text messages for data capture.
  • Implementing an electronic data capture (EDC) solution for collecting research data.
  • A system that sorts and invites over 70,000 NHS patients to lung cancer screening.
  • Optimising a data management system for use in rural areas of Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Degree or equivalent qualifications in a computer-related discipline, or proven relevant experience
  • Knowledge/experience of current software development practices, web development, SQL and the design of relational databases.
  • Experience of involvement in IT projects covering the full project lifecycle
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own work and follow standard operating procedures
  • Ability to work under own initiative and as a team player
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to communicate complex topics to technical and non- technical audiences
  • Ability to work with stakeholders to understand requirements and translate into technical specification
