Department

The Department of Education is seeking to appoint a Departmental Manager for a fixed term, 13 month period to cover maternity leave. The position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to contribute to the smooth functioning and success of a complex academic department.

Role

You will be responsible for the organisation, development, management and leadership of administration within the Department of Education to ensure it provides an integrated range of high quality innovative and focused services to staff and students as well as external partners and stakeholders.

The role includes high-level responsibilities for the Department’s financial, operational and personnel management, academic programmes and for the maintenance and development of the Department’s estate.  The post-holder plays a lead role in coordinating the wide variety of activities of the Department’s support staff and in managing one-off projects that require multidisciplinary input.  The role requires a person with a broad grasp of solutions to the changes that currently confront successful departments in the higher-education sector, along with proven skills in strategic planning and in human and project management.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Educated to degree level
  • Knowledge and understanding of the UK higher education sector and of the administrative services and systems required to support a substantial department within a large and complex organisation
  • Significant experience in a senior administrative role in a large organisation
  • Experience of financial management
  • Ability to line manage a large team, providing leadership, support, motivation and direction
  • Successful experience of change management and the ability to review strategic and operational procedures and processes, ensuring they are fit for purpose and implementing agreed change
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
