Research Associate in Economic Impacts of Flooding

We are looking for a talented and motivated post-doctoral research assistant who is able to co-develop a methodology to quantify the direct and indirect economic impacts of flooding on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). You will work under the supervision of the project PI and in close collaboration with partners and stakeholders to develop an analytical tool that will enable local authorities to carry out future flood assessments and develop evidenced and robust business plans for funding more effective measures. You will work in the Department of Environment and Geography within an interdisciplinary team of researchers in an iCASP-funded project titled “Bridging the knowledge gap to boost SME resilience”.
- To conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research.
- To work in close collaboration with project partners and local authorities in collecting data, analysing it and co-developing a methodology to quantify the direct and indirect economic impacts of flooding on SMEs.
- To conduct a literature review on the methodologies to assess the direct and indirect economic costs of flooding
- To write up research results and dissemination through reports, events, public engagement and outreach activities
- To contribute the writing up of journal articles
- To develop a close communication and activities to engage flood risk managers of the Leeds City Region and Yorkshire Flood Coastal Region into the co-production of the research
- To develop collaborative working internally and externally, duties to include: the building of the internal team; collaboration with colleagues on joint projects as required; participation in and identification of external networks in order to share information and identify potential opportunities for collaboration and possible sources of funding.
Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
- You should have a PhD or equivalent experience in global environmental change, environmental economics, risk management and related areas
- You should demonstrate knowledge on flood risk, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation
- You must have strong quantitative analysis and modelling skills and demonstrable experience in using Input-Output Analysis or related macroeconomic models
- Strong analytical skills using Matlab or related packages
- Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders
- Ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination
- Competency to conduct collaborative research projects and work in a team
- Competency to make presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other events
