Role Description

IT Services provides IT to the University.  We provide all the core services: system administration for hosts running Windows Server and Linux, in-house software development, network and telephony infrastructure, management of end-user devices, project management and business analysis.

We’re looking for an exceptional Windows Server and Virtualisation specialist to join the Systems Group. A self-motivated person who enjoys continuously learning new skills you will join the team who provide the infrastructure that supports the work of the rest of IT Services. 

We have over 1,200 virtual machines running on VMware vSphere, over 200 physical hosts providing services, our 'Viking' HPC facility and ~2.5PB of storage on NetApp and Dell SAN/NAS platforms. This infrastructure supports 8300 managed PCs, our critical business, teaching and research related systems, including HR, Finance and Student Records systems as well as over 130 bespoke applications and integrations which glue everything together. We have also recently set up an AWS environment with initial production workloads live, which we expect to grow rapidly.

Using your knowledge of enterprise Windows Server deployments, virtualisation platforms, and skills in scripting and automation, you’ll be a key part of the team that manages our VMware vSphere estate, secures systems using VMware NSX micro-segmentation and runs our Windows Server estate and Active Directory.

Like everywhere we have legacy services, but you'll be working with other teams towards getting rid of them! We’re moving into AWS and Azure and are starting to grow our skills and portfolio in that area. Knowledge of cloud technologies will be an asset, but we will train the right candidate as part of our extensive professional development programme.
