Role Description

Department

The Research and Enterprise Directorate is the University department responsible for central management of the University’s activities and strategy in research and knowledge exchange, and for providing comprehensive support to academic departments in their research and impact activities. Its primary purpose is to mobilise the University’s research and knowledge base in pursuit of excellence and financial sustainability, and to ensure that its research skills, knowledge and know-how benefit external users. In an environment of high competition for research funding and rapid change in funder expectations of Higher Education institutions, the Directorate leads operational change management in order to ensure that York remains competitive and successful in research and knowledge transfer.

The Directorate works closely with the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research, the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Partnerships and Knowledge Exchange, the University Research Champions and the Associate Deans for Research.

Role

This is a great opportunity for an experience administrator with a finance background to head up a new team of three staff.  The post holder will use their current knowledge in managing several recurrent funding programmes that are used inside of the University.  These funds support the development of research, knowledge exchange and impact in line with the University Strategic Plan objectives.   The post holder will be responsible for funding calls, promotion of the funding available, panel meetings, monitoring and eligibility of expenditure of funds, preparing for external audits and preparing reports for internal and external committees and groups.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • A general education to include three good passes at A level, or an equivalent educational qualification, or relevant experience
  • Experience of working in a senior administrative role in a large organisation
  • Detailed knowledge of managing a budget, authorising expenses and reporting on expenditure against the budget
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of the principles of service provision and office management and administrative systems and functions within a large, complex organisation
  • Ability to review procedures and processes, ensuring they are fit for purpose and maximise efficiency, make recommendations for improvements as identified and implement agreed changes
  • Ability to line manage a small team of administrative staff and to apply available resources to optimum effect
  • Demonstrable ability to lead and work as part of a team, with experience of collaborative working
  • Organised, enthusiastic, flexible, able to prioritise and demonstrate a high level of initiative
