Role Description


This Head of Individual Philanthropic Partnerships is a pivotal role in the Senior Management Team (SMT) of the Office of Philanthropic Partnerships and Alumni (OPPA). OPPA has responsibility of establishing and aligning fundraising strategy, targets and KPIs to the University’s Strategic Plan in order to secure philanthropic support for: excellence in research, an outstanding and valuable experience for our students and outstanding teaching and learning. In June 2019, the University launched its first fundraising campaign: York Unlimited. With ambitious targets to raise £120M, to secure 120,000 volunteer hours and to gather the insights from graduates around the globe this will provide an exciting, challenging and rewarding experience to a senior-level fundraiser.


You will focus on identifying support for a particular faculty and managing a personal portfolio of prospects and donors. Additionally, you will oversee the work of two Philanthropic Partnership Managers and will line manage the position of Philanthropy Officer (Legacies) and part-time administrator. The Individual Philanthropic Partnerships team currently comprises 2.3 FTE, with scope to expand this function as the Campaign for York develops. You will play a leading role in securing £50M+ in philanthropic funds towards the Campaign for York.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • You will be required to significantly expand the scope and level of engagement of  individual major donors (including but not limited to alumni, volunteers, the wider public and other potential funders) in order to increase giving through the Campaign for York.
  • You must be educated to degree level and, ideally, will have formal professional fundraising qualifications
  • You must have significant leadership experience and a track record in securing six figure philanthropic donations.
