Role Description

Time for a change? Looking for a new challenge? As one of the UK’s leading universities, we’re looking for talented developers to join our highly collaborative team delivering software of real value to our staff and students.

About the role

Working on a range of strategic projects, you’ll be involved in developing web applications and integrating business systems across all areas of the University’s activities and will take the lead on the development and support of new IT systems and services.

This is a particularly exciting time in our development as we plan to move our applications and services into AWS. By joining as we design our approach, you’ll have the opportunity to influence its implementation and, (although you may not have direct experience of AWS), we’re keen to hear your ideas about how the range of services offered by AWS can be used to deliver innovative services.

We support our staff to learn new skills and as such would like to actively encourage applications from people who have the right attitude and aptitude even if you don’t think you can ‘tick-off’ every tool or technology we’ve listed below. For example, we’ve had developers join the team with backgrounds in Python, Java and C#.

About you

Alongside a good understanding of modern approaches to application and data architecture, you’ll have a keen interest in development best practices and the tools that support it. In particular, we’re keen to hear from individuals with experience in some of the following areas:-

  • A modern programming language such as Node.js, Java, C#, or Groovy
  • OO development and design patterns
  • An MVC framework, such as Grails
  • SQL and design of relational databases
  • Development of REST APIs
  • A passion for Agile methodologies and concepts
  • Amazon Web Services

Equally important is your ability to quickly gain new skills across the spectrum of software development and integration.

What we offer

You’ll benefit from:-

  • 38 days holiday
  • Competitive salary
  • Flexible working
  • Generous pension (including 18% Employer Contribution)
  • Extensive professional development opportunities
  • Flexible benefits scheme (including cycle to work, dental & health plans, season ticket loans)

We are keen to hear from individuals looking to work on either a full-time or part-time basis. This role is aligned to Grade 6 on the University of York salary scale, with a market supplement available for candidates with the right skills and experience.

We offer a range of family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, staff engagement forums, campus facilities and services to support staff from different backgrounds.
