Role Description

As part of the newly revised structure within Directorate of Estates and Campus Services (DECS) we are looking for a Development Manager (Design & Estates Planning) to join our team. In this role you will report to the Head of Estates Planning (HoEP). You will have responsibility for ensuring the quality of design for buildings and landscaping across the University Estate is compliant with the emerging masterplan and design and landscape briefs and that strategic thought is given to long term planning and design of the estate. You will manage a small team including our landscape architect as well as relationships with external consultants and statutory consultees.

You will contribute your design expertise across all construction and landscape schemes. You will also manage major projects (circa £5m+) and a programme of work in conjunction with the Development Manager (Projects), coordinating project team resources and tasks to achieve the required deliverables and milestones. You will act as an advisor to senior managers with specific responsibility in respect of Estates Design and Planning and advise on design development, policy and strategic issues.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • Educated to degree level, or equivalent experience in a design and/or construction-related subject. (eg architecture, design, building surveying )
  • Chartered membership of professional body such as Architect (ARB) chartered surveyor (RICS) chartered engineer (MICE)
  • Extensive experience of Design Development in building construction and estates planning, ideally within a large, complex organisation (or have worked on complex schemes)
  • Knowledge and understanding of project health, safety and risk management within a live estates/construction environment and the requirements of complying with the CDM Regulations
  • Experience of setting up new projects and instigating appropriate procedures and systems
  • Core values that are consistent with DECS values
