An excellent opportunity has arisen for a horticultural technician to join Horticulture Facility Team at the University of York, the facility supports the plant science research and some teaching activities of the Department of Biology. The team provides an essential service, being responsible for the day to day maintenance and husbandry of the research plant materials across a range of growing conditions from an external field site to closely controlled environment glasshouses, chambers and cabinets.
We are looking for a technical horticulturist, having either a formal horticultural qualification (Level 3 diploma or equivalent) or experience of horticultural service delivery in a similar technical or scientific background. You will have experience of growing a range of research plants; from important agro-economic crops, to medicinal plants and classical biological model plants.
You will be a team player, with an ability to multi-task, plan your own work and provide direction for others. An effective communicator, you will be responsible for managing relationships with scientists and work closely with students to provide practical guidance on a range of horticultural processes and procedures. You’ll have a strong understanding of relevant health and safety requirements including COSHH, biological safety, manual handling and the application of professional pesticides.
Working alongside the Horticulture Manager and another full-time technician you will assist in the management of the facility, taking responsibility for the day-to-day operations of a dedicated set of facilities and have line management responsibility for two part-time assistant technicians. The role involves flexible working including weekends and public holidays as part of a rota.
Hours of work are 37 hours per week. Salary will be in the range of £25,941 – £31, 866. This appointment is offered on a permanent basis.
