Role Description


The Centre for Health Economics (CHE) is seeking to appoint two Research Fellows (Grade 6) in Health Economics to contribute to a range of applied and methodological projects under a programme of work being pursued by the Health Policy team in CHE. The Health Policy Team undertakes applied and methodological economics research to critically appraise and evaluate organisational and incentive structures of the health care system. We have a significant portfolio of research focused on the economics of mental health and mental health policy. The Health Policy Team also hosts the Economics of Social and Health Care Research Unit (ESHCRU).

The successful candidate will contribute to a portfolio of research projects, applying an economic perspective to the quantitative analysis and evaluation of health policy. You will be required to manage and analyse large and complex patient-level longitudinal datasets. You will also help to develop new project proposals and related activities.  


To contribute to the Health Policy team’s portfolio of research projects in health and mental health policy, including those on the ESHCRU programme. Key elements are:

  • To conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research
  • To communicate the results of research to different groups through written reports and papers, presentations at conferences and other forums, and at workshops and other meetings
  • To assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have a higher degree in economics, health economics or in a quantitative subject such as statistics or econometrics and have strong quantitative skills, ideally with experience of managing large datasets. A PhD in economics or quantitative subject or equivalent  experience is desirable.

You must have:

  • the ability to plan and prioritise work in order to meet deadlines, including using initiative to develop research objectives and plan research programmes,
  • competency to conduct individual and collaborative research projects as part of a team
  • strong statistical/econometric skills, evidenced by competency in use of spreadsheets and statistical software packages such as Stata, SAS, SPSS, or R
  • knowledge of a range of relevant research techniques and methodologies
