Applications are invited for a PhD position “Early Stage Researchers” (ESR) to be funded by the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “PETER – Pan-European Training, Research & Education Network on Electromagnetic Risk Management” within the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission.

With ever-increasing use of autonomous robots, and vehicles, safety and associated risk assessment are becoming increasingly important. The York Global Initiative for Safe Autonomy (www.york.ac.uk/safe-autonomy/) aims to ensure that robotics, their software, and their communications are safe. In this project we look at one key aspect of this emerging technology; the risks of electromagnetic interference. As well as working with the team at York you will be working with industrial partners including Lloyds register, Thales, MIRA, Barco, Melexis, Nedap, RH Marine; and universities including KU Lueven (Be), Twente, ESEO (Fr), WIS  and FHG (Ge). PETER has some of the best of European industry and the key academic players, guaranteeing an exciting interdisciplinary, intersectoral research-and-training programme.

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake secondments for periods of around 3 months to partner organisations in the project, and to travel to project meetings and conferences. The role requires the holder to: enroll in and meet the requirements of York's full-time PhD programme in Computer Science; conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research; analysis and interpretation of research data; use of appropriate research techniques and methods; writing up of research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations, public engagement and outreach activities; undertaking organisational and administrative activities connected to the research project; developing and initiating collaborative working internally and externally; work as part of a team communicating effectively with the project partners, working to deadlines, organising and planning work to meet project goals.

Applicants will be required to: have at least a good first degree in System Safety, Electronics, Computer Science, Physics, or Mathematics or equivalent;  be Fluent in English (IELTS 6.0 and above where study has not been in English); have knowledge of Electromagnetics.

ESR11: Modelling and Reasoning about Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Interactions in Autonomous and Complex Vessels

This post is based in the Department of Computer Science (https://www.cs.york.ac.uk/about-us/), working in the High Integrity Systems Engineering Group.

In this post the ESR will develop a through-life EMI-risk-based modular safety case approach. The work will seek to understand how EMI fits into a risk-based safety assurance process for safety-critical / high integrity systems. The ESR will establish the contribution of EMI to risk can be synthesised and presented in a form suitable for all of the stakeholders in the marine industry (designers, ship builders, regulatory authorities and owners).
