The Stockholm Environment Institute’s (SEI) York centre, based in the Environment and Geography Department at the University of York, is recruiting a Research Associate to become an integral member of a team working internationally to promote the development of integrated strategies for the mitigation of air pollution and climate change. This research supports the activities of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC http://www.ccacoalition.org), and you will help assist countries plan strategies to achieve development benefits by improving air quality and mitigating climate change. The focus of this support are the countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Role

You will conduct research on projects funded by the CCAC initiative called ‘Supporting National Action and Planning’ on short-lived climate pollutants (SNAP) and other initiatives, projects and activities being developed by SEI. These focus on two main aspects. The first is further development and application of a planning tool that is used to develop models of air pollution and climate change-related emission and projections, and to evaluate the socio-economic benefits that can be achieved through integrated air quality and climate mitigation strategies. This aspect involves development of the tool to improve its usability and extend its functionality, and to support partners in countries to apply and develop their own analyses. The second is to support policy development in partner countries in the sectors where emission mitigation is to be promoted, linked with the mitigation modelling. This aspect includes advising on the development of action plans, identifying implementation pathways for mitigation actions, understanding the institutional frameworks and policies in different countries and supporting monitoring and evaluation frameworks. 

SEI is currently working with 30 countries as part of the CCAC SNAP initiative. You will provide training in the use of the toolkit to developing country practitioners and governments and help countries develop their national planning and policy development and implementation. SEI has been successful in obtaining funding to continue this work over the next 2 years in countries including Bangladesh, Chile, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Maldives, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines and Togo.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You must have a PhD in atmospheric/environmental science or other relevant subject.  You will have an interest in the science, impacts and development and implementation of mitigation strategies for air pollution and climate change, ideally with experience of aspects related to atmospheric transport modelling, emission inventory compilation, air pollution health or vegetation impact assessment, or air quality or climate change policy development. You should be highly numerate, confident in manipulating large spreadsheet databases, with experience of using, and possibly developing, computer models for air pollution assessment. It is very important that you are a team player and have excellent interpersonal skills as you will need to help enhance the capacity of developing country researchers and staff of different governmental agencies. The post will involve extensive international travel. Excellent spoken and written English language skills are essential and skills in French/Spanish is desirable.
