Role Description

This is an opportunity for a postdoctoral research associate with experience in plasma physics or related field to join a collaboration between General Atomics San Diego, the University of York, and the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE). You will be based in the UK, with visits to General Atomics (GA) as well as conferences.

With the assistance and guidance of Dr Eldon and a team of local and international collaborators, you will develop real-time plasma control systems for divertor detachment and radiative power control on the MAST-U tokamak at CCFE. These algorithms will use signals from diagnostics including divertor Langmuir probes, divertor Thomson scattering and bolometers. The actuators will include local gas/impurity puffing, and the system aims to control the degree of detachment and/or radiated power. The resulting system will support divertor physics experiments on MAST-U, and is an opportunity for a suitably qualified candidate to play an active role in carrying out and leading experiments on MAST-U.

The present post is one of three postdoctoral researchers we are seeking, funded through General Atomics under contract to the US Department of Energy. This is an international collaboration, and you will be expected to make an international impact through your research outputs. Funding is available for international conferences and research visits.

The initial contract term is for one year, renewable annually subject to performance. We anticipate that this will extend until the end of the currently funded period in June 2021, subject to agreement by all parties.

  • To conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research.
  • To assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects.
  • writing up of research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD in Plasma Physics, or related discipline
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience
  • Ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination
