Role Description

The Finance Department provides professional and transactional support across the University to support the achievement of its strategic aims. The Department is responsible for providing decision support and advice for management and budget holders both at a corporate level and also for academic faculties and professional service departments.

Finance ensures that funding is in place to support the University’s short and long term business requirements, including a planned campus redevelopment programme which will take place over the next 10 – 15 years.

We have over 60 members of staff located around the campus and are organised into four main activity areas.

As part of the Finance Department, the Management Accounting team provides a finance business partnering service to Academic Faculties and Departments and Professional Services Directorates, incorporating budgeting, planning and forecasting of recurrent and capital programmes, support for business cases and investment appraisal, financial advice and internal financial performance reporting.

The Finance Business Partner - Professional Services plays a key role in the team, providing strategic financial support to the Registrar and Finance Director and their teams and leads a dedicated team providing support to Directors and other budget managers.

The role holder will:

  • Provide the Registrar, Finance Director and other Directors of Professional Services with a business partnering service based on strong rapport, trust and credibility which will inform, support, challenge and help drive their strategic decision-making processes.
  • Work closely with Finance colleagues and others to oversee provision of high quality financial management information backed up by advice and insight to all budget managers within Professional Services.
  • Provide an overview of the analysis and evidence to support option appraisals relating to investment, restructure or other business change for both the Registrar and the Assistant Director of Finance - Management Accounting.
  • Work closely with the Registrar and Directors of Professional Services to help improve financial performance, through income generation or cost reduction.
  • Lead the forecasting and budgeting process for Professional Services, encompassing the full range of income generating and expenditure activities.
  • Lead the production of accurate financial data for the Professional Services in line with the Group Financial Controller’s timetable.
  • Work with the Assistant Director - Shared Services to ensure that updated financial processes are embedded and approved.
  • Take an active role in suggesting and implementing process improvements across the management accounting team.
  • Undertake and support strategic projects as required.

 Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will be educated to degree level (or equivalent qualification) and hold a recognised professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACMA, ACCA or equivalent).

You will have demonstrable experience of change management and process improvement implementation, as well as a good working knowledge of project appraisal techniques and current accounting standards applicable in the UK. Some working knowledge of the UK Higher Education sector would be advantageous.

You will have good presentation skills and be able to communicate verbally and in writing in a well-articulated and succinct manner, tailored to your audience which will range from directors and senior management teams to individual budget managers and financial administrators.

You will be able to demonstrate advanced IT skills, and a high level of competence in analysing data and problem solving.

You will have strong project leadership and team leadership skills and experience, working in a large and complex organisation. Whilst HE sector experience will be an advantage, transferable skills from other sectors are welcomed.

Your ability to form partnerships built on trust and credibility will be key to success in this role. Focussed on solutions rather than problems, you will be able to analyse information and communicate conclusions persuasively. You will have a strong personal drive, combined with the ability to motivate others to succeed and will be able to demonstrate effective working as part of a successful team or independently.

The University is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community  – a place where we can all be ourselves and succeed on merit. We offer a range of family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, staff engagement forums, campus facilities and services to support staff from different backgrounds.
