Role Description

The Department of Environment and Geography at the University of York has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with the new Head of Department and to lead sea-level research activities during the 48 months of the headship tenure, starting 1 October 2019.

You will work in a sea-level research group consisting of two other postdocs and five PhD students. You will take the lead on relevant research projects, publications and conference presentations, whilst developing your own research profile. Your primary responsibility will be to maintain the research output of the sea-level research group, taking on and completing ongoing projects, and publishing results. You will also be able to contribute to the teaching programmes where appropriate (but not more than ca. 10% of your time). The role will allow ample opportunity for career development, both in research and teaching, and the successful candidate should be ideally equipped to pursue a long-term academic career upon completion of the contract.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have a first degree and a Ph.D. in relevant disciplines such as Geography, Geology, Earth Science or Environmental Science. You will have experience of field work, especially in coastal settings. You will have knowledge of coastal sediments and knowledge of sea-level reconstruction from salt-marsh sediments. Expertise in field and laboratory techniques is highly beneficial. You will be expected to present key findings in high impact academic journals and to present at national and international conferences. The post will involve working with other members of the sea-level research group; being able to work as part of a team as well as independently using own initiative is crucial.


This post is available on a fixed term basis for 48 months.
