Role Description

The University of York is looking for an enthusiastic individual to join the Media Relations team as a Press Officer.

The purpose of the role is to generate high levels of media coverage for the University in international, national, regional and specialist media. Some of our research findings have made headlines around the world, from the Washington Post to the Times of India and, as Press Officer, you will be an integral part of publicising the University's work across the globe.

Ideally with a background in journalism or PR, you will be expected to deal proactively and reactively with journalists, promoting the University's world leading research, teaching, student achievements and public engagement programmes.

You will have an eye for a story and the ability to turn often complex and technical subject matter into engaging and informative material, be it in the form of a press release, video clip, tweet or potential broadcast opportunity.

Excellent people and communication skills are necessary, as you will need to build relationships with a range of people across the University, the media and other key stakeholders.

You will need excellent IT skills and be comfortable working across multiple media platforms. You will also be calm under pressure and be expected to defend the University's reputation in crisis situations should the need arise.

The ability to work to deadlines in a busy office and use your own initiative to identify media-friendly stories is essential. You must be prepared to be on call on some evenings and weekends.

This opportunity is a full-time position, fixed-term for 12 months (maternity cover). Salary will be within the range £32,236 to £39,609 per annum, and you will receive excellent benefits including 38 days annual leave and a generous pension contribution.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to undertake a written test as part of the recruitment process. Details will be provided on the day of interview.

For informal queries about this vacancy, please contact Alistair Keely, Head of Media Relations at alistair.keely@york.ac.uk.

The University is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community  – a place where we can all be ourselves and succeed on merit. We offer a range of family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, staff engagement forums, campus facilities and services to support staff from different backgrounds.
