Role Description

The Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and the Department of Health Sciences, University of York are seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer or Lecturer in Global Mental Health.


We have an ambitious programme to expand leadership and expertise in global health research, with significant new investment in research and teaching posts, including Senior Lecturer and Lecturer posts and Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships in Global Health. The programme has been accelerated by recent success in securing three NIHR Global Health Research Groups, focusing on mental and physical multimorbidity, tobacco control and health econometric and economic evidence-informed policy.


The present post is part of this investment. We are seeking an individual with a developing (lecturer) or outstanding (senior lecturer) track record of research and in building innovative international research collaborations to tackle key global mental health issues. Candidates will need to be conversant with the range of methods used in population health, and health services research and have expertise and established track record in one or more of the following areas of research: trials, large datasets, implementation science, policy research, health economics, observational studies, systematic reviews or evidence synthesis. Candidates interested in generating new knowledge on prevention and management of mental and physical multimorbidity in low- and middle-income countries are particularly welcome.


In this post, you will be expected to develop global mental health research programmes and proposals and to lead individual or collaborative research projects and disseminate research through monographs, articles in journals of international standing, and other appropriate forms of dissemination, including national and international conference presentations.


The appointee will also provide senior-level leadership in the teaching of mental health and/or global health. You will design, develop and deliver teaching on global mental health; develop and promote innovative teaching and learning approaches and material, which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students on the Medical School undergraduate and postgraduate programmes; and supervise undergraduate and graduate projects and dissertations.


Further, you will undertake effectively a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities to support the work of the Medical School.


The successful applicant will have a PhD and track record of high quality research in applied health research, along with demonstrated ability to attract competitive research funding, lead and manage projects and generate high quality research outputs.


The Hull York Medical School (HYMS) brings together the strengths of Universities of Hull and York in the life, clinical, health and social sciences.  It works closely with other departments in the Universities and many staff are based in jointly managed academic centres in host departments.  For this post, the successful candidate will work within the Centre for Health and Population Sciences (CHaPS) in the Department of Health Sciences, University of York.
