Role Description

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate with experience in the experimental study of tokamak plasmas to contribute to a team of experts combining theory, computation and experiment. You will be a member of the York Plasma Institute, part of the Department of Physics, working under the direction of Dr Istvan Cziegler, but mostly based at Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in Oxfordshire.

With £4.3M of funding from EPSRC, the Universities of Oxford, Strathclyde, Warwick and York, in collaboration with Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, are embarking on a 5-year programme to understand the fundamentals of turbulence in tokamak plasmas. The central elements of the programme are interactions between flow and turbulence, and the impact of the ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure.

The successful candidate will utilize beam emission spectroscopy to exploit the new capabilities of the recently upgraded MAST-U spherical tokamak, as well as JET. The present post is one of seven postdoctoral researchers we are seeking to carry out research in these fields – initially for a period of 2 years, with the possibility of an extension. While each position will be hosted by one of our partner universities, you will be encouraged to collaborate across all four universities and Culham Centre for Fusion Energy. This is an internationally-facing programme, and you will be expected to make an international impact through your research outputs. Funding is available for international conferences and research visits.

  • To conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research.
  • To assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD in Plasma Physics, or related discipline
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience
  • Ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination
