Role Description

We seek a lecturer who will bring new areas of expertise in Music Education to the Department. These areas could include formal and informal pedagogical practices within international music education systems, and one-to-one, group and classroom teaching, but candidates with all Music Education specialisms are encouraged to apply. The post is offered on a full-time, open contract basis, and will include teaching, research and administration duties.

Music Education is an increasingly important area within the Department: you will join a dynamic team of Music Education specialists with particular interests in student-centred pedagogy, creative performance and reflective practice, and health and wellbeing. The Department as a whole provides a supportive and creative environment for both staff and students.

You will contribute to teaching and assessment on our MA in Music Education: Instrumental and Vocal Tuition and will help to develop new types of teaching at MA level. You may also be required to contribute teaching and/or workshops for our BA students. You will supervise PhD students and MA students, preparing them for international careers in music education. You will undertake a programme of independent research that includes grant applications and that leads to high-quality outputs suitable for inclusion in the Department’s submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Your administrative duties will involve participation in the departmental Board of Studies and relevant committees as well as activities related to pastoral care, student recruitment and public outreach.

You will have a PhD in Music Education and an established national or international profile as a Music Education researcher. You will have knowledge of music education systems across the world and of a range of relevant research methodologies. You will have experience of designing and delivering innovative modules at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, and a track record of enthusing students with your teaching. Your highly developed communication skills will allow you to engage successfully with international cohorts of students and to explain your research to specialists and non-specialists alike. You will demonstrate a collaborative ethos and a willingness to work closely with colleagues in all aspects of your role.
