Role Description

We seek an outstanding interdisciplinary, early-career researcher in Digital Heritage, with knowledge and understanding of human-computer interaction (HCI) and user experience design. You will have a key role as a Research Associate within the Digital Creativity Labs (DC Labs), leading and building new Digital Heritage focused projects in collaboration with external partner organisations.

You will be based at the main DC Labs site at the University of York, with a vibrant community of over 30 interdisciplinary researchers, and also within the Archaeology Department in the King's Manor site in the centre of York. You will also engage with our University partners in London, Durham and Cornwall and industry and 3rd sector partners in the Creative Industries.

You will initially work with the University of York’s Centre for Digital Heritage, the Archaeology Data Service, and leading researchers at York and Glasgow on the Discovering England's Burial Spaces (DEBS) project (, helping to co-design, disseminate, and evaluate applications to help community groups participate in burial space research.

You will be a key team member within DC Labs, conducting impact-driven research that harnesses the potential of games and interactive media for social, cultural, and economic good. You will be initially involved in ensuring the delivery of the DEBS project. This will involve developing and maintaining software specifications and product plans, based on stakeholder requirements; developing, leading, and conducting evaluation of resulting tools with community groups to assess utility, usability, accessibility, value, and impact; liaising between DC Labs software developers and ADS database developers; developing and delivering training for community groups; and subject to skills and expertise, developing software; and integrating and disseminating results through research papers, reports, and presentations. Beyond the DEBS project, you will be involved in a range of interdisciplinary research projects across the DC Labs, particularly in digital heritage and immersive and interactive media for heritage.

Under the mentorship and supervision of Dr Debbie Maxwell, Prof Julian Richards, and others, you will work with colleagues across disciplines and sites to frame and co-create new research and research grant proposals at the intersection of digital creativity and heritage.

You will have a PhD in Digital Heritage, or equivalent, with a record of high-quality publications according to your career level. You will bring an appetite for innovation and learning across discipline boundaries and application domains, and the ability to work with users to gather requirements. You can develop and maintain specification documents for software based on stakeholder input, and act as project manager liaising between stakeholders and developer teams and ensuring satisfactory delivery. You must have experience designing, conducting, and writing up evaluations of interactive systems, e.g. for accessibility, usability, utility, and impact. You will be familiar with digital heritage and methods for community engagement and participatory/co-design. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary projects and produce and disseminate research findings in papers, presentations, and other media are a must.

You are curious and have an appetite for learning and working with colleagues from other disciplines in new areas of knowledge and practice outside your intellectual comfort zone. You have a desire to work with external stakeholders to co-create research and achieve impact via applying research to solve real-world problems. You will have excellent communication skills, and ideally, experience of delivering impact against practical deadlines and requirements outside academia. Experience writing and winning research grants is a plus.
