Role Description

We seek an enthusiastic and motivated researcher in Data-Driven Storytelling to join a major 2 year R&D project aiming to demonstrate how immersive and data-driven technologies can radically transform audience experiences surrounding esports. The project seeks to re-imagine the way audiences engage with the genre through hyper-personalised stories, interactive content, data-driven narratives and cross-reality experiences that seamlessly stretch across devices, technologies, and spaces. The project consortium includes key industry stakeholders and leading innovators across esports, VR, XR, virtual studio technology, 360 degree video and big data analytics, including ESL, the world's leading esports company. The project will be carried out by a dedicated team of over 50 people, including software developers, 2D & 3D artists, content producers, designers, market analysts, business developers, as well as four key researchers located at the University of York, which will be leading on the key innovation areas of the project. The York-based project team will be situated at Digital Creativity Labs (DC Labs), a world centre of excellence for impact-driven research in digital creativity, focusing on digital games, interactive media and the rich space in which they converge.

You will be a key member of the project, conducting world-leading interdisciplinary research in games, bringing specific expertise in designing and implementing digital narratives and interactive experiences. You will work in the York-based team alongside other researchers and developers, closely collaborate with consortium members across the UK, and help with deployments and evaluation of research outputs in leading UK and international esports tournaments.

You will have a PhD on a topic related to the design and development of novel digital narrative experiences (e.g. games, interactive film or documentary, object-based media, data storytelling, immersive/VR storytelling) with a record of high-quality scientific publications suitable to where you are in your career, and a desire to develop your career through participating in interdisciplinary research across multiple projects, solving challenging problems, research grant writing and small amounts of teaching. You have a desire to work with external stakeholders to co-create research, implement working prototypes and achieve impact via applying research to solve real-world problems in the Creative Industries. You will have good communication skills for both academic and non-academic audiences, as well as understanding of the importance of communication in motivating other members of the team. Ideally you will have experience of delivering impact, working with the industry. Within DC Labs you will grow your entrepreneurial skills and learn more about these industries by working closely with them to develop impact-driven collaborative projects and explore opportunities for commercialisation and/or for generating social and cultural outcomes. As projects will be delivered in collaboration with partner organisations you will be willing to travel and undertake short placements in these partner organisations.
