Role Description

This new appointment of a Head of Legal Services is a significant investment by the University into its legal provision.  Reporting into the Deputy Registrar you will be responsible for establishing and developing the University’s legal service. This role offers you the opportunity to play a significant part in the establishment of a new department and act as the lead for all legal related university matters.

The Role
You will play a significant role in identifying legal risk and providing pragmatic advice to key stakeholders in the institution including the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Secretary and members of University Executive Board (UEB), Council and Senate (amongst others).

Your role will be to develop and execute the University’s legal strategy, with the objective of creating an internal provision. Drawing together the existing legal capabilities under the banner of ‘Legal Services’, you will establish and manage a solutions focused team that encompasses both strategic development and service delivery across the entire University.

Key Requirements

  • Degree and professional qualification in a legal practice
  • Excellent understanding of the current and changing HE sector
  • Up to date knowledge of relevant UK legislation
  • Ability to develop and lead an effective and motivated team
  • Experience of  successfully implementing a legal strategy
  • Significant experience of drafting, advising on and negotiating contracts
  • Experience of delivering legal advice and comment to a range of service users

Salary will be commensurate with experience on the Senior Management pay scales £57,000 - £78,000. The role includes an attractive benefits package, including a generous pension scheme (18% Employer contribution) and 38 days annual leave.
