Role Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to work on the Marie Slodowska Curie ECORISK2050 ETN project in the Environment and Geography Department at the University of York. ECORISK2050 brings together a world leading and interdisciplinary consortium of universities, research institutes, industry and regulatory and governmental authorities in order to deliver a cohort of 13 Early Career Researchers (ECRs) who are able to apply novel approaches and innovative thinking to tackle the challenge of assessing environmental risks of emerging chemicals in a changing World.

You will have an upper second class BSc or better in Environmental science, Biology or Chemistry or equivalent subject, you must also not have resided on the UK for more than 12 months in past 3 years and must be within 4 years of completing the degree that allows them to study a PhD in the UK or in their home country. Experience of the impacts of chemicals in the natural environment is essential.  Applicants whose first language is not English will need to ensure that they meet the University’s minimum language requirements for a PhD.

The successful applicant will work on a three year research programme to understand how chemical emissions in urban systems will change in the future due to drivers such as climate and demographic change and increased urbanisation. During the project, you will 1) develop an inventory of chemical use in urban systems for different European scenarios; 2) model use patterns and emission pathways of chemicals in urban systems over time; and 3) develop emission scenarios for chemicals in use in urban systems over time.

The research work will form the basis of a PhD programme so is ideal for someone looking to obtain a higher degree. During your time at York, you will also participate in the ECORISK2050 training programme which will involve a series of short courses, workshops and conferences at locations across Europe and in Israel on environmental risk assessment, environmental policy, and on impact and engagement. You will spend time with ECORISK partner organisations from the business and policy sectors obtaining hands on experience of chemical assessment work in the real world.

To meet the general entry requirements onto the York PhD programme at York, you must have a good (at least an upper second class) degree or equivalent in a science discipline such as environmental science, biology or chemistry. This position is open only to individuals who have spent less than 12 months in the United Kingdom in the last three years.

Applicants must also be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers, measured from the date when they obtained the degree that would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the UK.
